Last night I took my legal vows to become a vicar.
I do affirm and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and in public prayer and in administration of the sacraments. I will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by Canon.
Then any oath of allegiance and any oath of Canonical obedience.
So I have signed my life away. Literally and spiritually.
Bishop Tom gave us our charge last night, our call to work. In a time of the Church of England pulling itself apart, he spoke of what had held us together so far. A belief in the priority of the Bible. A beleif in the sacraments and the way we do bishops, vicars and deacons. And finally any intellectual flexibility. Any ability to not just work out what we dont like but to listen to all and work with people.
If all the bishops came to the Lambeth conference with that in the front of their mind then there is hope.

thanks for your love and prayers. On the final weekend the thing that stuck with me most was Mark w final comment to us. Jeremy was rightly being serious about how things will change and advice on how to cope. He then sprung on Mark for a comment.
Mark said smile, it will confuse them!
He did say a bit more than that but that is the bit that stuck. Frankly I kept thinking that yesterday and encouring my ordinands to smile
